What is policy endorsement?

A policy endorsement is a written change that adds to, removes from, or modifies the standard insurance contract.

Also called: insurance rider

Glossary date: April 6, 2026

How it works

An endorsement can change coverage, definitions, exclusions, drivers, vehicles, or other terms. It becomes part of the policy.

Example

An endorsement adds rental reimbursement coverage and states its daily and maximum limits.

Why it matters

The declarations page may not explain every change made by an endorsement.

What to check on your policy

Keep each endorsement with the policy and read how it changes the referenced form or coverage.

Put the terms into context

Read the full guide, find a nearby GoAuto office, or start a quote with the coverage details you want to discuss.
