Car insurance glossary
What is named insured?
The named insured is the person or organization specifically listed as an insured on the declarations page.
Also called: policyholder
Glossary date: April 13, 2026
How it works
The named insured usually has policy rights and duties, such as receiving notices and requesting changes. A listed driver is not always a named insured.
Example
Two spouses own a car, but only one appears as the named insured. They ask the insurer whether both should be listed.
Why it matters
Ownership, notice rights, and coverage can be affected when the policy names the wrong person.
What to check on your policy
Confirm that names match vehicle ownership and the insurer's requirements. Correct spelling and contact information.
