What is vehicle identification number?
A vehicle identification number is the unique 17-character code assigned to most modern vehicles.

How it works
Insurers use the VIN to identify a vehicle's year, manufacturer, model, equipment, and history. One wrong character can point to a different vehicle.
Example
A quote lists a base trim, but the VIN identifies a different trim with other safety equipment. Correcting it changes the policy record.

An incorrect VIN can cause registration, lender, pricing, or claim delays.
