What is underinsured motorist coverage?

Underinsured motorist coverage can help when an at-fault driver has insurance but not enough to cover a qualifying loss.

Also called: UIM coverage

Glossary date: February 9, 2026

How it works

The coverage often applies to injuries. Property damage availability, offsets, and payment calculations depend on state law and policy language.

Example

Your covered injury claim is larger than the at-fault driver's bodily injury limit. Underinsured motorist coverage may help with the remaining covered amount.

Why it matters

A driver can meet a state minimum and still have too little insurance for a serious accident.

What to check on your policy

Review the limit, stacking rules, offsets, consent requirements, and deadlines before settling with another insurer.
