# What is split limits?

> Split limits state separate maximums for bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident, and property damage per accident.

Glossary date: June 1, 2026.

## How it works

They often appear as three numbers such as 25/50/25, with each number representing thousands of dollars.

## Example

A 25/50/25 policy can provide up to $25,000 for one injured person, $50,000 for all injuries, and $25,000 for property damage in one accident.

## Why it matters

One limit can run out even when money remains under another part of the split.

## What to check on your policy

Translate all three numbers into dollars and compare each maximum with possible accident costs.

Coverage, definitions, limits, and legal requirements vary by policy and state. Your declarations page and policy forms control your coverage.
