# What is salvage title?

> A salvage title or certificate is a state designation for a vehicle that meets that state's definition of a total loss or severely damaged vehicle.

Rules for inspection, rebuilding, registration, sale, and insurance vary by state. A rebuilt title is not the same as a clean title.
