# What is proof of insurance?

> Proof of insurance is a document or approved electronic record showing that a vehicle or driver has an insurance policy in force.

## How it works

An ID card usually lists the insurer, policy number, vehicle, named insured, and policy dates. It summarizes coverage but does not replace the contract.
