# What is policy exclusion?

> A policy exclusion describes a person, property, use, event, or type of loss the policy does not cover.

Glossary date: April 6, 2026.

## How it works

Exclusions narrow the coverage grant and can appear in the main form or an endorsement. They differ among policies.

## Example

A policy excludes coverage while a vehicle is used for a particular commercial delivery activity. A loss during that use may not be covered.

## Why it matters

A broad coverage name does not override the contract's exclusions and conditions.

## What to check on your policy

Read exclusions that relate to drivers, business use, household vehicles, intentional acts, racing, and excluded people.

Coverage, definitions, limits, and legal requirements vary by policy and state. Your declarations page and policy forms control your coverage.
