# What is insurance subrogation?

> Insurance subrogation is the process by which an insurer seeks recovery from a responsible party after paying a covered claim.

Glossary date: July 20, 2026.

## How it works

The insurer may pursue another driver or insurer and may seek to recover a policyholder's deductible. Policyholders must usually protect the insurer's recovery rights.

## Example

Your collision insurer pays for repairs, then seeks reimbursement from the at-fault driver's insurer.

## Why it matters

Recovery can take time and is not guaranteed, including recovery of your full deductible.

## What to check on your policy

Keep evidence, cooperate with requests, report any settlement offer, and ask how recovered money will be allocated.

Coverage, definitions, limits, and legal requirements vary by policy and state. Your declarations page and policy forms control your coverage.
