# What is insurance score?

> An insurance score is a rating tool based on selected credit information and other permitted data, where state law allows its use.

Glossary date: June 22, 2026.

## How it works

It is not the same as a consumer credit score and is only one possible part of underwriting or pricing. Some states restrict or prohibit its use.

## Example

An insurer uses an approved model alongside driving and vehicle information when calculating a rate.

## Why it matters

Incorrect credit-file information can influence a score where the factor is allowed.

## What to check on your policy

Read the insurer's notice, review the referenced consumer report, dispute errors with the reporting company, and check state protections.

Coverage, definitions, limits, and legal requirements vary by policy and state. Your declarations page and policy forms control your coverage.
