Car insurance glossary

What is insurance lapse?

An insurance lapse is a period when required or expected coverage is not in force.

Also called: lapse in car insurance

Glossary date: March 16, 2026

How it works

A lapse can follow nonpayment, expiration without renewal, cancellation, or failure to replace a policy. A parked or financed car may still create insurance obligations.

Example

A policy ends Monday and the replacement starts Thursday. The driver has a two-day lapse and should not assume either insurer covers that gap.

Why it matters

Driving uninsured can bring legal and financial consequences. A lapse can also raise later premiums.

What to check on your policy

Compare old and new effective dates and times. Do not cancel an existing policy until replacement coverage is confirmed.
