# What is car insurance down payment?

> A car insurance down payment is the amount due when a policy begins under an installment plan.

Glossary date: March 30, 2026.

## How it works

It is usually part of the premium rather than a refundable deposit. The remaining balance is divided across later payments, sometimes with fees.

## Example

A six-month premium is $900. You pay $200 to start coverage and the remaining balance through scheduled installments.

## Why it matters

A low first payment does not necessarily mean a lower total premium.

## What to check on your policy

Compare the total premium, amount due today, later installments, fees, and cancellation terms.

Coverage, definitions, limits, and legal requirements vary by policy and state. Your declarations page and policy forms control your coverage.
