Car insurance glossary

What is car insurance down payment?

A car insurance down payment is the amount due when a policy begins under an installment plan.

Also called: initial insurance payment

Glossary date: March 30, 2026

How it works

It is usually part of the premium rather than a refundable deposit. The remaining balance is divided across later payments, sometimes with fees.

Example

A six-month premium is $900. You pay $200 to start coverage and the remaining balance through scheduled installments.

Why it matters

A low first payment does not necessarily mean a lower total premium.

What to check on your policy

Compare the total premium, amount due today, later installments, fees, and cancellation terms.
